Combe Martin Community Hero Awarded MPs Points of Light Award

Local MP, Selaine Saxby, has awarded her second Coronavirus Heroes Points of Light Award to Clair Rice of Combe Martin!

Clair (pictured centre with the food basket) has been recognised with this award for her founding of the Free Help Combe Martin (FHCM) community group and Facebook page, as well as her dedicated efforts in setting up the Combe Martin Foodbank and playing a central role to community efforts in Combe Martin supporting those most vulnerable or in need in the village during the Covid-19 outbreak.

The resident of the village who nominated Clair, said:

Clair has been an outstanding figure. She helps run the Free Help group here. When this crisis started, she was instrumental in setting up a group of volunteers to do shopping and collect prescriptions for vulnerable people who were shielding. She also helped set up a food bank scheme in the village for families and individuals in need. She has been a constant source of good advice and common sense. Many people in Combe Martin have been absolutely brilliant and helpful in our community but Clair easily tops them all.

Clair is the second winner of this award, after the previous recipient, Julie Whitton of Swimbridge.

In accepting the award Clair said:

This isn't just about me, it's about all our wonderful FHCM volunteers who have given their time to be part of FreeHelp Combe Martin (FHCM) & the Foodbank since March. FHCM itself dates back to 2014 and to date we have done beach cleans with Surfers Against Sewage, cleaned our river banks, held community swap shops and offered help to complete strangers in our community in the same manner that we would help family, friends, neighbours or work colleagues.

She also said she hoped this can only go to inspire others that they too can impact change and do something positive in their locality, and wanted to thank Combe Martin Football Club without whom the group would have had no location for the pop-up foodbank.

Selaine said:

Clair is thoroughly deserving of this recognition, and truly is a Point of Light in her community. Like Julie last week, Clair stands as a shining example to others of the best of North Devon and the community spirit that our villages and towns should be proud of.

If you are a resident of the village, I would encourage you to get involved with this wonderful group who are clearly part of the beating heart of the village and deserve as much support as they can get.

Thank you and congratulations to Clair and thank you to all those in Combe Martin who have volunteered, given up their time and played their part in the vital community efforts.

If you know someone in your community, like Clair, who is deserving of recognition and is a point of light, please send details of your Coronavirus Hero to selaine.saxby.mp@parliament.uk, along with a reason for you nomination and a picture for consideration for the award.
