Barnstaple Hero Awarded North Devon MPs Points of Light Award

North Devon MP, Selaine Saxby has awarded her latest Coronavirus Heroes Points of Light Award to Mickey Parker.

Mickey, from Barnstaple, has been supporting others throughout the covid-19 pandemic and is well known in his community for his acts of kindness to others which have included delivering cakes to frontline workers, helping residents with shopping and dressing up as Mickey Mouse. He also arranged a convoy for 5 year old, George Brayley to celebrate the end of his leukaemia treatment.

In their nomination, the fellow resident of Barnstaple who put Mickey’s name forward said:

“Mickey has been a ray of sunshine for a lot of people during the pandemic, he has set up a page on Facebook for people in need and has been collecting and delivering food and items to those in need. He has surprised children and adults with birthday cakes dressed as Mickey Mouse and just generally keeping the spirits of others alive.”

In accepting the award Mickey said:

“Whoever nominated me for this I thank you. I want to thank my fellow volunteers Katrina Barrow (Minnie Mouse), who has been a Godsend driving me round and looking after me, and Andrea Leiter who made all the cakes, plus everyone who donated and helped. Without the help of people in North Devon it wouldn't have happened.”

Selaine said:

“Yet again, I have been amazed by the dedication that people like Mickey have shown to their community. They are a shining example of the best that North Devon has to offer. It is clear his passion to support the community has been inspiring.

Thank you and congratulations to Mickey, and those who have helped him. He has brought so much joy to the lives of so many during the pandemic and is more than deserving of this recognition.”
